SSI
How Do I Apply for SSI?
Parents or guardians can apply for their child by calling their local Social Security office to make an appointment. You can get the number of your local Social Security office by calling the following toll free number:
In addition, you can obtain a great deal of information online at:
http://www.ssa.gov/notices/supplemental-security-income/text-understanding-ssi.htm
Specific information about children and SSI is available at:
http://www.ssa.gov/notices/supplemental-security-income/text-child-ussi.htm
The Social Security Representative will help you apply. When you make your appointment, ask them what forms you can fill out beforehand and what information you should bring along to the appointment. This will include financial information, medical records information, citizenship or immigration status information, and other information.
You can bring someone along to the interview to help you. Also, if you need an interpreter, you may ask for one to be provided at no cost to you.
It can take 3 to 5 months before you will be told whether your child qualifies or not. You will be notified in writing.
