The State-Children’s Health Insurance Program, or S-CHIP, provides health insurance for children of families whose income is too high to qualify for Medicaid but too low to afford private health insurance.
S-CHIP coverage is for children age 18 and younger. A few states have also made S-CHIP coverage available to the parents of eligible children. Each state sets its own rules, and decides what services are offered. Some states give their S-Chip programs special names. For example, Georgia calls its program PeachCare, while New Mexico named it NewMexiKids. (You'll learn later on how to find out about the S-CHIP program in your state.)
