Private Health Care Coverage
What Will Private Health Care Coverage Cost?
Like any products people buy on the open market, the cost depends on what they buy and where they buy it.
In the cases of coverage purchased by individuals, the premiums will vary based on a number of factors, such as: the benefits provided; the level of reimbursement for those benefits; the degree to which patients are allowed to select medical care providers; whether the coverage is for an individual or a family; the gender and age of the people covered; and the medical history and condition of the people covered. In addition, some plans have deductibles, which is an amount you must pay out-of-pocket before the plan will begin reimbursements. Also, some plans have co-payments, an amount expressed in dollars or as a percentage, which you will have to pay out-of-pocket. (For example, you may have to pay $20 for each doctor's visit, or the plan will pay 80 percent of the cost for the visit while you pay 20 percent.)
If you obtain health care coverage from work, the amount you pay will also vary depending on the type of plan you choose and the amount your employer agrees to contribute for the premium. Many employers offer different types of plans whose costs vary. In some cases, the employee's premium is paid for by the company, but the cost of coverage for dependents is paid by the worker. There may also be deductibles and co-payments that the worker will need to pay.
If you have coverage at work, sometimes you can obtain additional coverage by buying it yourself as an individual.
