What Does Medicaid Provide?

State Medicaid programs must cover certain health care services. These include the following services that are important to children (including teenage children):

  • Physician services
  • Laboratory and x-ray services
  • Hospital care, both inpatient and outpatient services, and emergency room visits
  • Emergency room care
  • Pediatric and nurse practitioner services
  • Early and periodic screening, diagnosis and treatment services for children and young adults under age 21.

Many states also provide:

  • Dental care
  • Eye care
  • Medical equipment
  • Physical therapy
  • Mental health treatment

If your state Medicaid program offers the choice between fee-for-service and managed care plans, you should ask them about the differences between them. For example, a fee-for-service plan may include more specialist physicians for you to choose from. On the other hand, a managed care plan may require less out-of-pocket costs to you.
