State Medicaid programs must cover certain health care services. These include the following services that are important to children (including teenage children):
Physician services
Laboratory and x-ray services
Hospital care, both inpatient and outpatient services, and emergency room visits
Emergency room care
Pediatric and nurse practitioner services
Early and periodic screening, diagnosis and treatment services for children and young adults under age 21.
Many states also provide:
Dental care
Eye care
Medical equipment
Physical therapy
Mental health treatment
If your state Medicaid program offers the choice between fee-for-service and managed care plans, you should ask them about the differences between them. For example, a fee-for-service plan may include more specialist physicians for you to choose from. On the other hand, a managed care plan may require less out-of-pocket costs to you.
